The Process is more important than the product.
Each Co-Creation begins with each individual taking their turn drawing a gestural line on the canvas with a piece of charcoal. This is done with their eyes closed while listening to music. The goal is to invite the participant to express and explore emotion without inhibition. Once each one has "made their mark," they discover shapes that overlapping lines have formed. As the individuals move around the work, they color in shapes using crayon and pastels. Next step is to draw patterns of dots and stripes while glueing magazine images in random places. Now all materials are being explored including crayons, oil pastels, paints, tissue paper, and chalk pastels all layering throughout the canvas.
Everyone is free to move around the entire piece, and each line and mark is subject to change as the co-creation is in its final stages.
In this exciting process the participants learn to let go of their inhibitions, adapt to group ownership and experience freedom of expression. I believe I see healing and joy simultaneously as this happens.
